Tczew
- Tczew is the capital of the poviat located in Pomorskie Voivodeship (Province), on the Vistula River. It is situated in the Kociewie Region - the second largest, next the Kaszuby, region in the Pomorze Gdańskie (Gdańsk Pomerania); the town belongs to Pelplin Diocese. It is an important junction of the northern Poland, located on the intersection of the roads of Śląsk-Bałtyk and Berlin-Królewiec (Kalingrad).
The first reference to Tczew dates back to the year 1198 when duke Grzymisław gave Gdańsk Pomerania lands to Joannici Order. The name of the town which appeared in the document was Trsow.
The rising importance of the Vistula River and few settlements which were established in the 12th and the 13th centuries, made it possible to build the castle; at the end of 1252 and the beginnig of 1253, Sambor II made Tczew the capital of the duchy (the previous capita...
