Zamosc

  • Zamość is a poviat city (land county) situated in the south-eastern Poland (Lublin Highland). Being one of the most authentic Renaissance cities left in Europe, Zamość is known as "Renaissance Pearl" and "Padua of the North".

Zamość was founded in 1580 on the initiative of Jan Zamoyski, The Great Crown Hetman and Chancellor. The town was designed by an Italian architect Bernardo Morando and has been a great achievement of late Renaissance European thought. Zamość remains a perfect example of a Renaissance town of the late 16th century, which retains its original layout and fortifications as well as a large number of buildings blending Italian and central European architectural traditions.

At the turn of the 16th to the 17th century, the town was the most modern fortress in Poland. Around the city, the neo-Italian mighty ramparts were built for its defence.

Zamoyscy's Ordynats held their own private army in the fortress. In the middle of the 17th century, the fortress resisted the attack of Chmielnicki's army of Cossacs; the army of the Swedish King Charles Gustav also failed to conquer the town. After its loss of Kamieniec Podolski in 1672, Zamość became the most important fortress in eastern Poland.

The end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century was characterized by the quick development of the city and population growth; Armenians, Jews, Greeks and Ukraininas were settling in the city. In consequence, Orthodox, Catholic and Armenian temples as well as and Judaist Synagogues were built Zamość.

In December 1918, Zamość was the centre of the communist revolt, which in the times of People's Republic of Poland was known as "Zamoyskie Uprising". It was suppressed by the army commanded by major Lis-Kula.

In 1939, the whole region of Zamość was a field of the fierce battles with the Nazi Army, which ended a day before Warsaw surrendered. After the war, the region of Zamość was divided between Germany and the Soviet Union.

    Zamość is known for its famous writers: S.Klonowicz, Sz.Szymonowicz, K.Koźmian, S.Młodożeniec, B.Leśmian.

Pope John Paul II visited Zamość on June 12, 1999.
