Szczytno

  • Szczytno is a town located in Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship (Province). Three domestic roads cross the town: 53 (Olsztyn - Ostrołęka), 57 (Bartoszyce - Pułtusk) i 58 (Olsztynek - Szczuczyn). What's more, four railway lines pass through the town: to Olsztyn, Ełk, Ostrołęka and Mrągowo (the last two are currently closed).

The only airport in this part of Poland - the Interantional Airport "Szczytno-Szymany" (a former military airport) is located in Szymany, the village situated 7km from Szczytno.

The origin of the town is connected with the Teutonic Castle which was built in the middle of the 14th century, near an old trade route leading from the Baltic Sea to the south of Europe.

In 1360, a group of beekeepers, who came from Mazowsze, settled to the north of the castle; the settlement was called Bartna Strona. Due to the rebuilding of the castle and change of its function, another settlement, which already existed in the 15th century and which was located to the south of the castle, started to develop intensively.

At the beginning of the 18th century, a quickly developing settlement received the right to brew beer. From 1616, Szczytno has been defined as "the small town" however, it was granted full town rigths only in 1723.

During the 17th century the town was devoured by the fires, epidemics and war damages. In the 19th century, there was a significant spatial and demographic develoment of the town. In 1818, Szczytno became the capital of the poviat.

At the end of World War II the town was severely destroyed. The first repatriates from Wołyń, who came to Szczytno after the Germans' escape and displacement in June 1945, inhabited the town and became its local community.
