Szczyrk
- Szczyrk is the tourist and holiday resort - second largest winter sports resort in Poland. The town, with the area of 39 sq km and the population of 5500, is situated in Beskid Śląski.
Some people say that the town took its name from the sheep bells (in Polish "szczyrkania"); others claim that the name Szczyrk resembles the sound of agricultural implements hitting the stones. Experts say that the town's name originates from the word "szczerkały" which means pebbles.
The development of tourism started after World War I. This was prompted by numerous opened field hospitals where Austrian soldiers treated their war-time wounds. Approximately 10 pensions were built before the outbreak of World War II; the modernisation of the main road which also started before the war, due to the heavy weather conditions prevailing in the Beskidy mounta...
