• Szczecin is the capital and the biggest city of Zachodniopomorskie Voivodeship (Western Pomerania Province). It is situated on the banks of the Odra River, Regalica (branch of Odra) and D±bie Lake, 65 kilometers from the Baltic Sea. Szczecin is an important harbour and its shipyard is the fourth-largest in Europe. It is a big industrial, cultural and scholarly centre as well as an important centre of the water transport (the navigable Odra River is used, among others, for transporting mined material from Upper and Lower Silesia).
  
  Around the 11th century, settled by Slavic tribes, Szczecin was the centre of the Baltic trade and craft. In 1121, the city was subjugated by Boleslaus III the Wrymouthed.
