Starogard Gdanski
- Starogard Gdański is the capital of the poviat (second-level admin. unit) located in Pomorskie Voivodeship (Province); the town is situated on the river Wierzyca on Starogardzkie Lakeland. It is also the capital and the centre of Nadwiślańsko-Pomorski Region - Kociewie, as well as one of the oldest towns of the whole region.
In 1939, Starogard received the coat of arms which was granted by the Teutonic Knights. Starogard was granted town rights in 1348. It resisted the oppression of the Teutonic Order and in 1440 became a part of the Prussian Confederation; in this way the town contributed to the return of the Royal Prussia to Poland in 1466.
In 1484, a great fire burnt down half of the city; at the beginning of the second half of the 17th century, Starogard was occupied by the Swedes.
