Sandomierz
- Sandomierz is located on the Vistula River in Świętokrzyskie Voivodeship. It is situated on the hills, on the edge of Sandomierz Upland. The industrial part of the town, known as Nadrzezie, is situated on the right bank of the Vistula River in Sandomierz Valley.
The origins of Sandomierz date back to prehistoric times. The oldest reference to the town comes from the 10th century.
In the 10th century, Sandomierz was a settlement located on the castle hill; in the 11th century, it was fortified and became duke's residence. Another fortified settlement, which was establised near the built in the 15th century Dom Długosza (John Długosz's house), gave the origin to Sandomierz.
During the feudal division of Poland, Sandomierz became the capital of the Duchy. It was granted town rights probably before 1227. The town was relocated after it w...
