• Poznań is a capital of Wielkopolskie Voievodeship (Province), situated on the banks of Warta River. It is the fifth city in Poland in terms of population density.
  
  First references to the city date back to 1005AD, in the Thietmar's Chronicle, yet the first traces of human existence on the territory of today's Poznań date back to as far as 8900-8000 BC.
  
  The Chronicle as well as archeological excavations prove that Poznań was one of the greatest fortresses in Poland during the reign of Boleslaus I the Brave. According to some historians, Poznań could be the place where Mieszko I was baptised (accepted the western form of Christianity) in 966, and this date is believed to mark the start of the Polish state. During the years 968-982, the city was the seat of bishop Jordan who became the first missionary bishop of Poland.
