Poznan

  • Poznań is a capital of Wielkopolskie Voievodeship (Province), situated on the banks of Warta River. It is the fifth city in Poland in terms of population density.

First references to the city date back to 1005AD, in the Thietmar's Chronicle, yet the first traces of human existence on the territory of today's Poznań date back to as far as 8900-8000 BC.

The Chronicle as well as archeological excavations prove that Poznań was one of the greatest fortresses in Poland during the reign of Boleslaus I the Brave. According to some historians, Poznań could be the place where Mieszko I was baptised (accepted the western form of Christianity) in 966, and this date is believed to mark the start of the Polish state. During the years 968-982, the city was the seat of bishop Jordan who became the first missionary bishop of Poland.

Duke Mieszko I founded the Piast dynasty, which ruled until 1132 and during this time made Poznań one of the main centres of the developing Polish sate. At the turn of the 12th and 13th century, Poznań, so far a fortified castle and the duke's residence was transformed into a city modelled on other Western European cities. After the city establishment under Magdeburg law by Przemysl I (Przemysław I), Przemysł II surrounded the city the wall and the market square was built.

The 16th century is called "the Golden Age" of the city; in that time Poznań became one of the major economic and trade centre in Poland.

Poznań was steadily growing until the wars, epidemics and catastrophes slowed the economic development and ruined the city in the 17th and the first part of the 18th century.

After Poland's partition in 1793, Poznań became a part of the Kingdom of Prussia and remained under Prussian control until the end of World War I. On December 27, 1918 The Great Poland Uprising started in Poznań and sprang all over the Wielkopolska Region. As a result, the city gained independence and became once again a Polish city. The first judiciary, administrative and educational units were established.

Poznań continued to develop and prosper until the outbreak of World War II. The city was liberated on February 23, 1945 and was rebuilt from the ruins. Living conditions during communist times (censorship, shortages of food, fear) led in 1956 to the factory-workers anti-communist protests - street riots suppressed by the army. Among the most important events are Pope John Paul II two visits in 1938 and 1997, Weimar Triangle in 1998 (the summit hosted by the President of Poland Aleksander Kwaśniewski was attended by Jacques Chirac and Chancellor Gerhard Schröder). In 1999, the archeologists excavated in Ostrów Lednicki the remnants of the castle of Mieszko I. The discovery became a nationwide sensation.
