Pisz
- Pisz is a town located on the edge of the forest massif called Puszcza Piska (Piska Primeval Forest), near Śniardwy - the biggest lake in Poland.
Like in the case of the majority of the towns of Mazury, the Teutonic Castle had been built before Pisz was established. Pisz received town rights in 1645.
After Friderich Wilhelm came to the Prussian throne in 1640, another colonization of the Pisz Land began. The Prince-Elector found the treasury empty; as he wanted to be independent of the nobility, he started to settle the then uninhabited forests.
Despite intensive colonization, until the end of the 17th century the population of the region decreased significantly. It was caused by the Polish-Swedish wars and the invasion of the Tatars, who in October, November and December of 1656 reinforced the army of Hetman Gosiewski and in February the arm...
