Pila
- Piła is a town in Wielkopolskie Voivodeship (Province), until 1998 the capital of the Piła Voivodeship. It is the fourth biggest town in the voivodeship and the largest one in northern Wielkopolska region. The town is located in the Valley of the Gwda River, on the borderland of Wałeckie Lakeland, Wysoczyzna Krajeńska and the Valley of the Noteć River (11 km above Gwda's estuary to the Noteć River).
Piła originated from an old fishing settlement located in the woods on the river Gwda. It was granted town rights as early as the 15th century, which was approved in 1513 by King Sigismund the Old.
In the years 1626 and 1834 Piła was affected by great fires while in 1655 and in the first half of the 18th century the town was seized and destroyed by the Swedish army. As a result of the flood from 1720, the town lands were changed into swamps. From the beginni...
