Oswiecim (Auschwitz)
- Oświęcim is a poviat town located in southern Poland on River Soła estuary into Vistula (Wisła). After the administrative reform in 1999, the town belongs to Małopolskie Voivodeship (Province).
The town is situated in the centre od Oświęcim Valley between the Silesian Upland and Carpathian Highlands.
Oświęcim is the beautiful town with over 800 years history as it was reigned by the Piast dynasty.
At the turn of the 13th to 14th century, Oświęcim castellany became a part of Cieszyn Duchy; in the years 1312-1317, Oświęcim was the capital of an independent duchy.
In 1327, duke John I of Oświęcim made Oświęcim a vassal state attached to the kingdom of Bohemia for over a century. In 1445, the Duchy of Oświęcim was divided into three smaller ones: Duchy of Zator, Duchy of Toszek and Duchy of Oświęcim. In 1457, Polish king Casimir I...
