Olsztyn
- Olsztyn is the capital and the biggest city in Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship (Province), a seat of the land and urban county authorities as well as the capital of Warmia Archdiocese and, from 1992, of Warmia Metropolitan.
The first reference to the city dates back to 1334. Olsztyn received city rights and the name "Allenstein" (from the Prussian name of the river Łyna) on October 31, 1353. Polish name - Olsztyn came into use in the 16th century.
During numerous wars of the 15th century the young town was destroyed a number of times. According to the Peace of Toruń, which was signed in 1466, Olsztyn and the whole Warmia Region became a part of Poland.
