Mragowo

  • Mrągowo is a town located in Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship (Province). It is a popular tourist and holiday resort famous for "Country Picnic" - a country music festival which is organised every year.

The first settlement was built near the wooden Tetuonic Watchtower in the half of the 14th century.

The first information about the town's location on the Chełmno Law comes from the years 1404-1407; Mrągowo was granted town rights by the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, Konrad von Jungingen.

The location privilege was renewed in 1444. Two names of the town were in use in that time, namely: Ządźbork (Polish name) and Sensburg (German name).

After the Thirteen Years War, according to the Peace of Toruń from 1466, Mrągowo remained under the rule of the Teutonic Order.

In 1520, the town was seized and burnt down by the Polish and Czech troops.

In the years 1806-1807, the town was destroyed by the Napoleonic as well as Russian and Prussian Army.

Until 1818, Mrągowo was an administrative unit of the neighbouring Szestno. Later it became the headquarters of the poviat authorities.

In 1825 the Town Hall was built; the railway connection with Kętrzyn (1897) and with Biskupiec (1898) was established.

In 1945 the 20% of the town town was destroyed by the Red Army.

The town's name was changed in 1947; Mrągowo tooks its name from Krzysztof Celestyn Mrongowiusz (1764-1855), a pastor and a writer who explored the dialects of Mazury and Kaszuby.
