• Jastrzębie-Zdrój is a town located in south-western Poland, Śląskie Voivodeship (Province), on the south-eastern edge of the Rybnik Coal Region.
  
  The development of the town was closely connected with the discovery of the brine springs and the establishment of a health resort. In 1962 a Spring House was opened in the Park in the Zdrój district.
  
  The outbreak of World War II hindered the development of the town; the existing sanatorium buildings were renovated after the war. As the result of intensive geological research which started in 1951, hard coal deposits were discovered. In 1962 the first mine started to work, yet the health resort gradually declined.
  
  Jastrzębie was granted town rights in 1963 after the merger of the villages: Jastrzębie Dolne, Jastrzębie Górne, Zdrój health resort, Moszczenica, Borynia, Szeroka, Zofiówka, Bzi Zamecki, Cisówka, Ruptawa, and temporarily Pniówek.
  
  Until 1974 another four mines were opened and in this was Jastrzębie Zdrój appeared on the economic map of Poland.
  
  In the 1970s and 1980s, the town was a local centre of the working class movement - an Independent Autonomous Trade Union SOLIDARITY (NSZZ Solidarność).
  
  Many interesting architectural monuments have survived and can be admired today, including old spa buildings in the Zdrój district.
  
  Thanks to the brine springs and peat resources it is possible to treat locomotive diseases and rheumatism.
