Frombork

  • Frombork is a town located in Braniewo Poviat, Warmińsko-Mazurskie Voivodeship (Province); it is the seat of the Frombork Commune.

The first reference to the town appears in the document from 1278, where bishop Henryk Fleming bequeathed to his brother Gerhard the land near the "settlement of Our Lady."

At the beginning, the town belonged to the bishops of the Warmia region, from 1320 it belonged to the chapter. It was known as Civitas Warmiensis (Warmia town) as Frombork was the capital of Warmia.

Frombork was granted town rights by bishop Ebernard from Nysa on July 8, 1310.

From the 13th century Frombork belonged to Warmia Chapter, which in the years 1329-1388 founded the cathedral on the hill in the southern part of the town. At the turn of the 14th and 15th century, the cathedral was fortified with towers and gates.

Nicolaus Copernicus, a canon of Warmia Chapter, from 1510 until the day of his death on May 1543 lived and worked on the Cathedral Hill. It was here that Copernicus wrote "De Revolutionibus" - a masterpiece which changed the hitherto prevailing view on the universe.

In 1772, after the First Partition of Poland, the town was rulled by the Prussian government.

The development of tourism, which took place at the end of the 19th century and which was triggered by the establishment of the railway line in 1899, supported and contributed to the town's growth as the holiday resort. Few hotels, inns and guest houses were built at that time.

After the end of World War II, during which Frombork was severely destroyed and its population decimated, its town rights were taken away; they were restored in 1959.
